Founded in 1980 by wilderness guide and depth psychologist Bill Plotkin, the Institute is one of North America's longest-standing organizations offering contemporary wilderness rites. "Animas" is plural for "souls" in Spanish. In Jungian psychology, the Anima is the Inner Woman in a man; the Animus, the Inner Man in a woman.

Marti holds a BA in biochemistry from Harvard University, an MFA in graphic design from the Yale School of Art and Architecture, and has advanced training in neurophysiology, psychology, and anthropology. She was president of her own design firm for 20 years.

The Clinical First Responder™ This hands-on training is designed specifically for staff working with therapeutic populations in either wilderness or residential settings. The primary goal is to provide staff with helpful tools to increase their success in facilitating positive outcomes for troubled adolescents, while also working more effectively as part of a treatment team.
